Inequalities in Maternal and Child Health in Brazil: 20 years of progress

BrazilReport

A report by the International Center for Equity in Health (ICEH) recently published by the editor of the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel) shows a detailed analysis of progress achieved in coverage of the most important interventions in maternal and child health in Brazil, with a focus on equity. Using data from the Pesquisa Nacional de Demografia e Saúde (PNDS) from 1986, 1996, and 2006, inequalities in the distribution of said interventions were analyzed according to income, education, and place of residence. Beyond those data, the authors conducted an extensive literature review on health equity in the country. Among other important findings, this work presents data on child nutritional status, for example, as measured by anthropometric indicators. An increasing trend in coverage was observed, for both the economically advantaged and disadvantaged, but there were negligible reductions in the differences between groups at the socioeconomic extremes. Thus, combatting inequalities in maternal and child health in Brazil remains a pressing challenge. Click here to see the report: PDF
