Researchers of the International Center for Equity in Health of the Federal University of Pelotas collaborated in a Nutrition workshop in West Africa
As a Countdown 2030 initiative of capacity building, from June 10th-14th, a nutrition-focused workshop was conducted in Dakar, Senegal under the leadership of the West African Health Organization, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and other institutions such as Johns Hopkins University and the International Center for Equity in Health of the Federal University of Pelotas (ICEH/UFPEL). The overall goals were to (1) enhance evidence for nutrition-related issues for women, children and adolescents in West Africa, and (2) strengthen capacity for the analysis of nutrition data from household surveys (DHS and MICS) and other sources (i.e. routine health information system data, SMART and PMA surveys and specific surveillance surveys where available and relevant). The focus was on the 15 West African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guine-Bissau, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Liberia, Togo, Senegal, Sierra Leone), which were represented by members of Ministries of Health and/or research institutions. Fernando Wehrmeister and Inacio Crochemore da Silva, UFPEL professors and members of the ICEH, were responsible for the equity-related sessions, which focused on inequality data analyses and interpretation using data from all West African countries.
