World Immunization Week highlights ICEH research on vaccination inequalities

Held annually from 24 to 30 April, World Immunization Week, promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO), aims to highlight the role of vaccines in protecting health throughout life and expanding access to immunization worldwide.

In this context, the International Center for Equity in Health (ICEH) highlights its contribution to research on immunization inequalities. Between 2024 and 2026, ICEH researchers published 12 scientific studies on the topic in collaboration with institutions from Brazil and abroad.

These studies explored multiple dimensions of inequalities in child and maternal immunization, including zero-dose children, disparities related to income, education, gender, and place of residence, as well as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on vaccination coverage.

The research has also contributed to the development of new indicators and monitoring strategies, including analyses related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) immunization indicator and the use of comparable data across low- and middle-income countries.

These findings reinforce an important message: increasing vaccination coverage alone is not enough if vulnerable population groups continue to be left behind.
