ICEH Retriever: immediate access to over 3.7 million estimates for research in reproductive, maternal, child, and nutritional health

The International Center for Equity in Health (ICEH/UFPel) will launch, on December 8 at 11 a.m. (Brasília time / GMT-3), the ICEH Retriever – a global data platform that includes standardized, precise, and comparable indicators on reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition (RMNCH+N).

Covering more than 100 indicators from 488 national surveys across 120 countries, the Retriever offers open access to the data and temporal comparability (since 1991), positioning itself as the go-to resource for researchers, policymakers, health professionals, and international organizations in the field.

“The Retriever overcomes the limitations of traditional repositories by maintaining a comprehensive and up-to-date set of standardized indicators, enabling consistent analyses of health trends and inequalities,” explains ICEH Director Aluisio Barros.

Among its main strengths are statistical rigor, retrospective recalculation of indicators based on updated definitions, and the integration of multiple sources, including DHS, MICS, and national surveys. As an equity-oriented tool, the Retriever allows users to explore data disaggregated by eight inequality dimensions, including wealth, place of residence, and women’s education, while also providing precision measures such as the standard error and sample sizes.

The platform will be officially presented in a live webinar streamed on Zoom, featuring demonstrations of the platform and participation from ICEH researchers and international guests from institutions that have been working with the ICEH database: Jennifer Requejo (GFF), Hannah Tong (Johns Hopkins University, LiST), and Oscar Mujica (PAHO/WHO). The Retriever will be freely available on the ICEH website after the event.
