Team Members

Cesar Gomes Victora

Emeritus Professor of Epidemiology at the Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel), Brazil. He has been with this university since 1977. He obtained a medical doctor degree from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 1983, earned a PhD in Health Care Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has conducted extensive research in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and other Brazilian states and has worked as a researcher and consultant for more than 40 countries. He has been an advisor to the World Health Organization and UNICEF. His areas of research include maternal and child health and nutrition, breastfeeding, birth cohorts, social inequalities, and evaluation of health services, with more than 600 publications. C. Victora holds a position of level 1-A researcher of the Brazilian Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). He has honorary appointments at the Universities of Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Oxford and London, and sits on the Editorial Board of several journals. He was president of the International Epidemiological Association (2011-2014). In 2017 he was honored with Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, being the first brazilian researcher among the winners.

Aluísio J. D. Barros

Received his medical doctor degree from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil, in 1986. He worked in the Biomedical Informatics Unit for a year and then obtained an MSc degree in Statistics from the same university in 1990. He was granted a scholarship from the Brazilian Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) for a PhD program in the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he obtained a MSc degree in Medical Statistics in 1991 and a PhD in Epidemiology in 1996. A. Barros then joined the Department of Social Medicine, Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel), Brazil, to work in epidemiology research. He is currently Associate Professor in this university dedicated mostly to teaching biostatistics. A. Barros was also a Public Health representative in the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES) from 2005 to 2007 and Associate Editor to Revista de Saúde Pública (RSP) from 2005 to 2009. He is currently Scientific Editor of the RSP.

Beatriz Raffi Lerm

Graduated in Nutrition from Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel) in 2016. She participated in Science Without Borders scholarship program (2014-2015) and studied Nutritional and Behavioral Science at the University of Delaware (DE, USA). She worked as a research assistant at the Harvard School of Public Health on a project, which aimed to validate a tool to measure the degree of processing in foods and diets. She is currently a Master's student at the Postgraduate Program in Epidemiology of the UFPel, and joined the Center for Equity in March 2017.

Carolina Coll

Graduated in Physical Education from Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil, in 2010. She obtained a MSc and PhD Degree in Epidemiology at the same university. Her doctoral research was about physical activity and mental health during pregnancy and the postpartum period, using data from the 2015 Pelotas Pregnancy and Birth Cohort Study. She completed a doctoral fellowship at the University of Oxford (UK), where she was attached to the Psychiatry Department. Carolina joined the International Center for Equity in Health in January 2017 as a post-doc student and her work involves data analysis and writing of scientific papers.

Fatima Maia

She holds a degree in Library Information Science from the Federal University of Rio Grande - FURG, a Master's degree and a Doctorate in Communication and Information from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS. She is currently an adjunct professor of FURG's Library Information Science course. Has experience in the area of scientific communication, processing and search of information, metric studies in information science. She works at the International Center for Equity in Health, Federal University of Pelotas, developing research activities and information processing in the health area.

Fernanda Ewerling

Fernanda is an economist (Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil) with a strong interest in health and social disparities in health. She did a MSc in Epidemiology, with the Postgraduate Program in Epidemiology, Federal University of Pelotas, completed in 2014. The topic was the importance of individual assets to a wealth index developed for Brazil. She then got accepted as a PhD student in the same program, now to work with health inequalities, as part of the team of the International Center for Equity in Health. As part of PhD activities, she got involved in a project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on empowerment of women and girls.

Fernando César Wehrmeister

Epidemiologist, he has a degree in Physical Therapy (Universidade Regional de Blumenau, FURB, Brazil), Master's degree in Public Health (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, UFSC, Brazil), PhD in Epidemiology (Universidade Federal de Pelotas, UFPel, Brazil) and post-doctoral fellowship at this same university. He is currently Adjunct Professor I of the Department of Social Medicine, UFPel Medical School. He joined the Center for Equity in February 2013 and his work involves data analysis and drafting of technical reports and scientific papers.

Franciele Hellwig

Graduated in Economics from Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel), Brazil, in 2015, she has experience in health economics and inequalities associated with fertility decision-making. She joined the Center for Equity in August 2016, and is currently a Master's student at the Postgraduate Program in Epidemiology of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Brazil.

Gary Joseph

Received his medical doctor degree from Escuela Latino Americano de Medicina (ELAM), Cuba, in 2010. He received his medical specialist for family medicine in 2012 from the same school. He completed a MSc in epidemiology at Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel), Brazil, in 2014 and joined the PhD in the same program in 2015.

Giovanna Gatica

Received her nutritionist degree from Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC), in 2005. She obtained a MSc degree in Epidemiology with emphasis in lifecourse from Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel), Brazil, in 2010, and her PhD degree in Public Nutrition from the Instituto Nacional de Salud Publica (INSP), Mexico, in 2016. She was granted scholarships from Wellcome Trust and the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia de Mexico (CONACyT) for the MSC and PhD programs, respectively. Also, she was granted scholarship from Fogarty-NIH for a PhD fellowship at Michigan University. Since March 2017 has a postdoctoral position at UFPel and joined the Center for Equity. Her areas of interest include maternal and child health and nutrition, and social inequalities.

Inácio Crochemore Mohnsam da Silva

Graduated in Physical Education from Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel), Brazil. He obtained a Master and Doctor Degree in Epidemiology in the same University, where he has currently a Post-Doctoral position. He joined the Center for Equity in February 2015 and his work involves data analysis and drafting of technical reports and scientific papers.

Janaína Calu Costa

With a degree in Nutrition from the Universidade de Sao Paulo (USP), Brazil, in 2012, she has a specialization title in Public Health fom the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil, in 2014. Janaina worked until 2015 as technical consultant for the General Coordination of Food and Nutrition of the Ministry of Health, Brazil. She is currently a Masters student at the Graduate Program in Epidemiology of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel), Brazil, and has joined the Center for Equity in March 2015.

Jesus David Cortes Gil

Graduated in Psychology from Universidad Liceo Pedro de Gante, Mexico, in 2005. He obtained a specialization in Transpersonal Psychology, 2006. He also obtained a Master degree in Public Health with specialization in Social Sciences and Behavior in the National Institute of Public Health of Mexico in 2013. His master research was about social barriers for physical activity. Currently he is a PhD student in the Postgraduate Program in Epidemiology of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Brazil. Jesús David joined the Center for Equity in March 2017.

Leonardo Zanini Ferreira

Graduated in Internet Systems from the Instituto Federal Sul-rio-grandense, Brazil, in 2013. He is currently a Master's student in Computer Science at the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPEL), working with Machine Learning techniques. He joined the Center for Equity in May 2012 and his work involves data analysis and website development and management.

Luis Paulo Vidaletti Ruas

Statistician graduated from Univesidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 2008. He worked in Mae de Deus Hospital, in Porto Alegre - RS, for a year with Care Indicators. He worked in basic and advanced statistics classes for two and a half years throughout Brazil and Chile, always using statistical packages. He joined the Center for Equity in Jan 2014 and his work involves Coordination and Management of Data Analysis. He also works on creating maps and dashboards. He recently became an Epidemiologist at the Federal University of Pelotas - UFPEL - for completing the Master's degree course.

Luisa Fernanda Arroyave Echeverry

Graduated in Health Systems Information from Universidad de Antioquia (UdeA), Colombia, in 2013. She obtained a Master degree in Epidemiology in the same University in 2017. Her master research was about latent tuberculosis in security guards and inmates from two Colombian prisons. Luisa has a strong interest in health situation in vulnerable populations, computational tools for data management in research, and geospatial tools. She was involved in infectious disease research in Colombia, like HIV, tuberculosis and pneumonia. She also worked with the Department of Medical Microbiology in the University of Manitoba, Canada. Luisa worked until 2016 as professor in two universities in Medellin, Colombia. Currently she is a PhD student in the Postgraduate Program in Epidemiology of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Brazil. Luisa joined the Center for Equity in March 2017.

Marilia Mesenburg

Graduated in Biology from Universidade Federal de Pelotas, in 2008. She earned a Master's degree in Epidemiology from Universidade Federal de Pelotas, in 2012. Currently, is a PhD student in the same institution. She has experience in epidemiological research. She joined the Center for Equity in August 2016 and her work involves data analysis and drafting of technical reports and scientific papers.

Micaela Milman

Gratuated in Argentina as a Trilingual Executive Secretary at the Argentine Institute of Executive Secretaries (IASE) in 2011. She joined the Center for Equity in November of 2016. Her work is related to the administrative part of the Center such as International and National events planning. Currently she is a Graduate student of Management Processes at Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel).

Roberta Bouilly

Received her medical doctor degree from Escuela Latino Americano de Medicina (ELAM), Cuba, in 2015..She joined the Center for Equity in March 2017, and is currently a Master's student at the Postgraduate Program in Epidemiology of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Brazil.

Ursula Fabiola Reyes Matos

Graduated in Biology at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH), Peru in 2004, she has experience on health projects in rural areas and also participated in the coordination of Countdown to 2015 project in Peru. She joined the Center for Equity in March 2017, and is currently a Master's student at the Postgraduate Program in Epidemiology of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Brazil.
